Poetry and Religion: An Introduction

This class is taught by Ms. Sarah Rindner, Tuesdays at 8:30PM (May 13- June 17).

Even a brief glance at Tanach will reveal how rich the relationship between poetry and religion can be. However, beginning with Plato's famous banishment of poets from his ideal Republic, many traditional thinkers have questioned the role of poetry in cultivating moral or religious behavior. This course will explore some of the ways in which poetry has been construed in the religious imagination and also look at ways in which English language poets have sought to incorporate religious perspectives into their work. Poets we will read include: George Herbert, John Donne, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, and Allan Ginsberg.
